Sikkim

Sikkim is in the north east corner of india and it would probably taken at least 3 days to travel by train/bus. I decided to fly into sikkim from delhi and i was glad i did. the closest airport city to sikkim was only about 50 miles away but it took close to 5 hours by jeep. geographically sikkim isn’t that large in square miles but because it’s all in the hills/mountains, it took some serious mountain driving on dirt roads to get some major area to another. I hadn’t taken any trips on shared jeeps up […]

Free Speech in Tibet

I did a photography project for Tibetan Human Rights Watch while I was in Dharamsala and I rather enjoyed the experience. It was a nice excuse to stop people on the streets and photograph the variety of people in the city. By this time i suspect my passion for travel photography had wane quite a bit but after doing this mini project and interacting with people, i came to the full realization that i was more interested in the portraiture. It’s been over 10 years since i discovered photography through travelling and in the past years […]

dharamsala

dharamsala was probably the biggest seed that lead me to india. the idea of meeting the dalai lama in his “home residence” had been in the back of my mind for a long time. it’s like going home to my spiritual ground zero sort of speak. i had plan my schedule around the dalai lama’s december teaching and alas, he did cancel the local teaching while i was in india. nonetheless, dharamsala didn’t disappoint. through the power of ‘six degrees of separation’, i get introduce to a local ex pat that used to live in the bay […]

Rishikesh

The distance from delhi to rishikesh isn’t that far, probably less than 100 miles but the bus trip total a short 8 hours later. I arrived around 6am in the morning and had booked a room on airbnb at a local ashram. i bet you figure by now that something goes wrong and of course it does but as i will learn, the first hours of any new city rarely goes ‘right’. since i am not travelling on some organized tour, you’re very vulnerable after doing an overnight trip and don’t know where the relative distance is […]

Delhi

delhi is either a good place to land or a bad place depending on how fast you want to bump into the real india. good because it’s going to reset your perception and bad because you’re not ready for it. almost instantly i knew i wanted to get out as fast possible. of all the craziness that attacks your senses, it is the one of constant honking from the thousands of tuk tuks in tight alleys was the one that got to me right away.

i landed at 4am and i had arrange for a pick up […]
